Actor Headshots: Styling and Preparation
What to wear? How to do my hair? What colours are okay? The importance of a headshot cannot be overlooked as the Australian entertainment industry grows, and with the many Hollywood productions choosing to shoot in Australia.
Imagine your headshot as the front cover of a book – it should make the casting agent want to delve deeper into your talent. It's your first impression to casting directors and agents. Here’s a guide for your upcoming headshot session with R.A.D BlackStar Photography.
Clothing, HAIR, and Makeup
Clothing: Plain solid colours only, with shades that complement your skin tone and eyes. No patterns or logos. Jewel tone colours like navy, burgundy, or emerald green can add depth without overpowering your features. For men, adding a well-fitted suit jacket or blazer in neutral tones like charcoal can show confidence. Pair it with a shirt in a complementary colour. Please bring a few outfit options to your session (note: usually no bathroom nearby, so ensure to wear a singlet underneath that you are comfortable changing in).
Hairstyle: Keep your hairstyle simple and polished. Tame any flyaways or frizz with necessary products (but not too much product). Choose a style that frames your face well and allows for versatility in looks. Keep your natural texture i.e. curly, or straight, or waves etc.
The haircut and colour you get photographed in is what the casting directors expect to see when you meet them - so avoid any drastic changes after your headshots are done!
Makeup: Opt for neutral tones that enhance your features, without overshadowing them. Avoid heavy contouring or theatrical looks. Concealer is advised for dark circles under eyes, and anywhere else needed. A light layer of pink blush on the cheeks and a touch on the tip of the nose helps add colour. A matte foundation powder helps reduce shine while we shoot outdoors. If you identify as a woman, you may also want to define your eyes with one light layer of mascara and subtle eyeshadow. We can 'add makeup' during post-processing when editing, but cannot tone it down. Less makeup is more.
PRE-PREP
Expression: Practice with selfies the expressions you would like to do for your headshots. Consider the range of roles you typically play on screen or stage, and convey that through your expressions. Your headshot should hint at your ability, whether it's dramatic intensity or comedic timing. We will also do shots with completely neutral expressions, which allows casting directors to see you as a blank canvas for any character.
Health: Get plenty of rest the night before to avoid tired eyes, dark circles, and fatigue lines. Drink plenty of water in the days leading up to the shoot to keep your skin hydrated and glowing (avoid cigarettes and alcohol for those few days!). Please keep a water bottle with you on the day of, especially as we only shoot outdoors in the sun - you may get thirsty.
Location: Arrive early to your photoshoot to settle any nerves and for any last-minute touch-ups. Iron your outfits beforehand, and carry it safely to location. Ensure to pack a few extra options for different lighting and background scenarios.
